School COVID-19 Prevention Partnership (SCPP)
The SCPP grant is a joint effort between the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Heluna Health, and the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). Mini-grants were awarded at three levels: Tier I was at the District level ($150,000), Tier II was at the School Site level ($75,000), and Tier III was at the Classroom level ($10,000). Grantees submitted plan proposals that were approved prior to selection.
The Center for Distance and Online Learning (CDOL) provided technical assistance to mini-grantees related to implementing their projects. This has included reviewing project plans and budgets, developing tools for implementation, providing support to recipients to implement respective programs, visiting school sites to provide recommendations for next steps, and consulting with Public Health and Heluna for grant compliance. Over 80 mini-grants were implemented across LA County, serving over 50 schools in 18 different school districts and charter organizations.
The overall themes of the projects included improving attendance, addressing social-emotional learning, and physical fitness and wellness. Schools implemented a wide variety of improvements, including:
- training for staff and parents
- student recognition programs
- social-emotional learning curriculum
- establishment of wellness areas
- building school community gardens
- mental wellness counseling programs
- providing students with new, comfortable, and flexible seating in their classrooms
- playground items and structures
- physical fitness and sports equipment
- student field trips
- arts integration activities
- yoga classes
- after-school programs
- AND SO MUCH MORE!
